Dragonflies have been around for 300 million years.

Dragonflies have been around for 300 million years and ancient ones had wings 2 feet across. Dragonflies, the Odonata order, has been ‘highly successful’ for a number of reasons. They live fully underwater as juveniles and above water as adults. Animals with such a diverse life style tend to survive sudden catastrophes much better than animals with a specialized niche.

Odonata were the first animals to fly under their own power. They evolved wings before any other animal, including other insects. Odonata have specialized wing muscles that are very maneuverable.
