"Honey, I Shrunk The Kids"
DISCOVER THIS TINY.EARTH WITH ME.

I hope you enjoy this little insight I can give you into this Tiny.Earth under our feet. What started out as a side project in photography turned into a passion and fascination for all those little creatures walking, crawling or even jumping through the gras stalks.

You remember that 1989 movie "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" ? Well, this is like it for you, but from the comfort of looking, and learning, while sitting in your chair. Enjoy it!

Behind the lens

I am Tom Jacob (Nikon Tom on my social media accounts) a photographer living in Spain, and shooting mostly Travel & Lifestyle photo work. As said, my steps into extreme macro photography went from a past time into turning it into a dedicated website you have in front of you. You can have a look at my other photography side here if you are interested.

There was just something so fascinating about being able to see that Tiny.Earth so up close, and suddenly see that there are crawling around amazing creatures I didn't even knew existed before. I started to share my macro work online and it felt great to show other people what they were missing out on...like a new road of discovery.

The more one learns and acquires knowledge about Nature, the more he respects, and the more he can find the beauty in even the little things. I hope in these times of climate change, habitat loss and the over-use of pesticides, I can slowly make a change and make you appreciate how intriguing but also how immensely important these little animals are to us in the end. Thank you.

I get asked a lot about the equipment I use: I am shooting on Nikon camera bodies of course, and use, or tried, a variety of Nikon macro lenses and other excellent macro lenses brands (Laowa, Sigma) or Godox for flash lights. All this can give you some idea of how my shots were made, but although good equipment is important, it is not the most important factor when it comes to shooting live macro bugs in the field. I'll try to explain you this in my blog section over time.

ethics on macro photography

In this already fragile planet we live, we must understand as photographers not to leave any foot prints nor to disturb or harm our subjects. I am very much against freezing or even sacrificing the animals, so they sit still, just to get a good shot. Extreme macrophotography is not easy, and finding willing subjects to shoot is, well, up to them to decide really. I personally find this challenge the best part, as I remember I am a guest in their world. As in all nature photography it is all about getting to know their behaviour.

Almost all of my shots are taken in the field crawling through bushes or laying flat on the ground. There are some tricks of course to get the shot you want, or how to work with backgrounds, and I will get to them over time in my blog.
